Deren Oshiro, Athletic Director
Class of 1986
I started at HBA in 7th grade. Along the way, I found that I enjoyed writing. Initially I wanted to go into journalism, or possibly be an English teacher, but I switched over to health and physical education. After I graduated from college, a position opened at HBA and I was hired in 1990.
Some of my fondest memories of HBA were of the times that we were together as a class, like class camps, our senior class trip. The most important thing I learned from HBA is that God loves me, and I was created for a purpose.
HBA has provided my children with lots of great opportunities. My daughter’s been able to participate in the arts program, theatre and Mock Trial. My son has been able to participate in multiple sports. He’s had a chance to run cross country, play basketball and volleyball, and participate in track and field. I know when my children leave HBA they will be prepared academically, but my hope is that they will know they have a purpose, and their purpose is to serve the Lord in whatever they do.
I’ve had the unique experience to see HBA from a lot of perspectives, first as a student, then as a coach, a teacher, and now as an athletic administrator. It’s been neat to see the school’s enrollment grow, along with the number of programs that it now offers. It’s been wonderful to see all of those things come to pass while we continue to allow our Christian mission to permeate all arms of the school.
