The HBA boys varsity volleyball team took its game to the Beach City Invitational and represented the school and the state well by finishing in the top ten. The tournament was held March 17-18 in the San Diego area at three different sites – La Jolla High School (tourney host), Scripps Ranch High School, and Point Loma High School.

Thirty-two teams began pool play March 17 with the top 16 finishers advancing to championship bracket play March 18. Most of the teams in the field were from California, specifically from the Southern Section or San Diego Section. HBA was the only Hawaii team, but there were three teams from Nevada and one from Arizona.

Perhaps the highlight of the tournament was HBA's competitive showing against Beckman High from Irvine. The Patriots (17-1) were ranked 4th in the nation heading into the tournament (following a championship in a Las Vegas tourney the week before), and their top hitter has committed to play for Long Beach State next season. However, the Eagles played point for point with them, before ultimately succumbing 25-20, 25-20.

Leading the way as starters for HBA were junior setter Davin Rausch, senior hitter Kellen Takatsuka, junior hitter Michael Johnson, sophomore middles Max Wiemken and Bryson Gonzalez, and junior libero Dru Pang.

The team was coached by Teoni Obrey, Serafin David, Jr. and HBA counselor Danford Chang.
