Hawaii Baptist Academy finished second on Sunday in the state championship of It's Academic. Kaiser High School put up a tough fight and took off with a 70 point lead in the first part of the game. HBA trailed behind and narrowed the spread by the end. Kaiser finished with a score of 550, while HBA finished with 420 and Maui High School finished with 240.
"This is the second time we've faced Kaiser. They're a great team, and it was an honor to be able to compete against them again. Going against a tough opponent teaches you to stay focused. When we were down after the first round, we had to rally together and encourage each other to stay focused so we could end well," said Chase Higa, team captain.
Higa and his teammate, Dylan Tsuruda, are graduates of the class of 2017. Their teammate, Joel Lau, will be a senior in the fall of 2017. Lau says he plans to return next year, and hopes to compete against Kaiser again. Michael Hu, science department chair, and Maurine King, retired social studies teacher, coach the team. Lucas Chun, junior, served as the team's alternate.
You can watch the rebroadcast of the championship episode on Saturday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. on K5.
